I see quite a few complaints on here about the long overtime hours and work/family life balance, but we take the time as a family to make this work ourselves. We do not use the company as an excuse for lack of time as we are adults and make our own decisions in this life. You have to make the time to balance out your life. The company cannot do that for you. It is really easy to blame someone else. Sure the hours are long, and life can get hectic because of it. But there are 24 hours in each day, and 7 days in each week. Within that timeframe, anybody can find set up even small blocks of time to do things with family.
The economy fluctuates and therefore causes the needs of the customers to fluctuate along with it. This unfortunately means that there will be times that freight will slow down and people with be laid off. This economic fluctuation cannot be controlled by the company. If you are expecting to work a straight 8 hour shift 5 days per week, no more and no less, then this is probably not the right type of job for you. Freight companies are honestly meant for workers who can deal with the short layoffs, fluctuating shifts, and who are always more than willing to accept the offer of overtime work without complaint to earn what they can to provide for their families. To be respected, you must earn it. It is not something that is just handed over freely because you want it.
