Pros

ABF is a great company who has been there for us when we need them. My husband is able to work the long hours needed to support us in hard times as I have multiple health issues that take me out of my office for extended periods of time. He has proven that he is a hard worker and does not shy away from working extra hours if he can safely do so when ABF requests them of him. I have met, and have a high degree of respect for, Tim Thorne as well as some of the other executives within the company who do their best to make it the best working environment that they can for all employees. Mr. Thorne is very personable and has a fantastic sense of humor. The safety Officer dinner with all of the executives flying in to be with the workers and their families was so wonderful. The entire 19 years my husband worked for another carrier prior to making the move to ABF, that company never once had a dinner like this for it's employees.

Cons

I see quite a few complaints on here about the long overtime hours and work/family life balance, but we take the time as a family to make this work ourselves. We do not use the company as an excuse for lack of time as we are adults and make our own decisions in this life. You have to make the time to balance out your life. The company cannot do that for you. It is really easy to blame someone else. Sure the hours are long, and life can get hectic because of it. But there are 24 hours in each day, and 7 days in each week. Within that timeframe, anybody can find set up even small blocks of time to do things with family. The economy fluctuates and therefore causes the needs of the customers to fluctuate along with it. This unfortunately means that there will be times that freight will slow down and people with be laid off. This economic fluctuation cannot be controlled by the company. If you are expecting to work a straight 8 hour shift 5 days per week, no more and no less, then this is probably not the right type of job for you. Freight companies are honestly meant for workers who can deal with the short layoffs, fluctuating shifts, and who are always more than willing to accept the offer of overtime work without complaint to earn what they can to provide for their families. To be respected, you must earn it. It is not something that is just handed over freely because you want it.

ABF Freight has clear policies in regards to employee harassment. Please have your spouse contact his Branch Manager in order to report any previous or ongoing harassment. He can also contact ABF Freight Human Resources at abfhr@freight.abf.com or by calling 479-785-8717. ABF Freight also does not assign specific forklifts to individuals. This has been reinforced at your husband's local facility.

Pros

Pay is best in the business. $100,000+ first year as a road driver. Year two I made $107,000… and took two months off for cancer surgery. Year three I made $129,000. I average 2-3 nights per week in a hotel. Usually only 1 night out then back home the next day. Frequently running turns (home at end of the run). Insurance is free and EXCELLENT coverage. I paid $1,000 total out-of-pocket for cancer surgery.

Cons

Not much life/work balance. Frustrating spending time on the extra board waiting to get a call to go to work, but with more seniority you get less wait time.
