Pros
Significant intellectual freedom to work on all kinds of engineering problems that is reflected in the breadth of the past and current work. Beyond expanding the technological horizons, the job offers a truly unique opportunity to learn proposal/grant writing, project management (including financial/budgetary management), etc.
Cons
It is hard to deny that the pay is on the lower side of the spectrum, especially with the recent inflation. Also, the job requires flexibility to work long hours before critical deadlines (such as a proposal deadline), but it balances out in the long term, i.e., flexibility to do fewer hours later as compensation.
