Pros

Above all, the ambition for the product development is commendable and despite a number of pivots in recent years, it solves a genuine problem, particularly in the SME banking space. In some areas is is a market leader, in others it is lacking and will unlikely be able to catch up to competitors, but overall Airwallex has truely changed the face of cross border business banking. Being a part of this was quite a privilege. In terms of work and the day to day, it is an environment that encourages creativity and problem solving, and I would strongly recommend any ambitious person at the start of their careers to choose a stint at Airwallex over for example, a bank or consulting firm.

Cons

I enjoyed my time at Airwallex. But I can talk to some of the struggles the business is facing from my perspective within the ANZ commercial team. a) As the company prepares for IPO, getting things done internally has become increasingly difficult. (Necessary) additional risk and compliance hurdles have slowed things down, however frustratingly few of the decision owners that can get things done actually have backgrounds in financial services. b) In Australia, the business struggles with commercial leadership; this has been a bit of a recurring issue since day dot. The talent pool is far smaller than overseas, which has created a bizarre spectrum of leaders. For anyone joining Airwallex in AU, I'd encourage you to explore some of the LI profiles of the previous sales leaders over the years, throw a dart and you might end up with a leader with international banking or consulting at a tier 1 firm, or some seemingly random dude who inexplicably has been gifted a position of authority. As an IC it was never clear to me what this process was, but I had the pleasure of working with a number of our leadership: The good ones were good, the bad ones were phenomenally bad. c) The business struggles to retain knowledge (in AU). The business has made a trade off in its hiring to not target profiles from commercial banking or consulting, which carries both pros and cons. The major downside is a broad lack of understanding of the wider business banking environment, which exacerbates the issues from a) and b). Ultimately, the AU business has traditionally relied on a small number of core, experienced people, and the risk it carries from losing any one of these is quite high. I do want to note that I genuinely did enjoy my time at Airwallex and these cons are potentially nitpicking. I left Airwallex having felt like I had grown personally and professionally.

Pros

High autonomy and agency. As a senior IC I have leadership's trust in driving my work, engaging with partner executives and generating new ideas and partnerships. Clear line of sight into how my work positively impacts the company. I can draw the line between my effort and that enabling a small or large part of our success. Diverse product and partner work. I work with large and small partners and across our entire product offering, which keeps my day to day fresh and diverse. Great people, all hard working, smart and well credentialed.

Cons

Global team makes for frequent night time calls, if something can't be handled over Slack. Hard driving. There's lots to do and big ambitions, so everyone is spread thin working on high priority/impact projects.

Pros

Working at Airwallex has been an incredibly rewarding experience, especially as part of the sales team. The company is in a very strong growth phase, which makes it an exciting place to be. Over the past few years, Airwallex has scaled rapidly, processing hundreds of billions in payments annually. There are clear career progression opportunities if you perform. Leadership is supportive of internal mobility, and high performers are recognized and promoted. You’re surrounded by smart, driven colleagues who are collaborative and willing to help, which creates a motivating environment day to day.

Cons

Like most high-growth companies, things can move fast and change quickly, which may not suit everyone. There can be pressure to perform given the pace and ambition of the company.
