Pros

The first 2 years as an L5, I got a hiring bonus of $30k, making total compensation $130k. During my third year, I didn't get a promotion but did achieve "exceeds expectations" during annual reviews, and my base salary went up to $117k, plus like 5 or 10 RSUs. If you love clicking buttons days, nights, and weekends, while constantly looking for coworkers weaknesses to exploit, you'll do fine. If you are good at marketing yourself to managers and then changing jobs every 9 months to a year, you'll do even better. Not enough time to fully own projects or have to report on their completion, plenty of time to fluff up your accomplishments. Are you a soulless robot that even takes pictures of the leaderboard at a work bowling party? You'll love it.

Cons

Not great for anyone who worked in an office pre-pandemic. When we returned to office in 2023, my larger org had SO many people who joined during the pandemic, and had not worked in person at an Amazon building before. The open office plan was loud with people taking meetings at their desks because there weren't enough meeting rooms, and there were still so many direct team members in other states and countries. If you get stuck with a manager who doesn't like you, you better try to rotate as fast as possible or that manager will be on the lookout for every possible thing to spin as mistakes or opportunities for improvement. I get it, the company wants bloodthirsty business machines, not actual humans. So if you are an actual human, you might not like working there.

Pros

Really smart people, a lot of opportunity for growth, always encouraged to be innovative, think big, and create something new. Competitive salary and benefits with other major tech companies. 100% self motivating work environment. No dress code and 4 legged friends are welcome.

Cons

You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.
