Pros

A few people who really deeply care about the work, and some positive policies around remote work, travel. Moving medicine and medical supplies to emergencies around the world is the main thing they do well that is important, and in truth there are maybe 4-5 people really doing that work outside of the warehouses. The total lack of organization and clarity mean that the few people who can figure out how things work and to get things done don’t have to ask permission to do it because they’re so siloed and everyone is so confused.

Cons

Poor leadership and lack of clarity and vision mean that most processes that are straightforward in other organizations are unclear, totally disorganized, or unnecessarily complicated at Americares. There are clinics, but they’re poorly run. There are warehouses full of medicines moving around the world, but they rely on rinkydink spreadsheets jerryrigged together. They have an emergency roster, but no one gets pulled from it. They have little to no actual field presence in responses they say they’re working in. HR is working their little fingers to the bone in here claiming their salaries are competitive when it’s clear that they are not, or - if they ever were - that information is now outdated and behind. (In the meantime, HR are notoriously impossible to get any real support from in AmeriCares, and know almost nothing about global employment law while also simultaneously claiming to want to be a global employer.) Their claim here that 23% of staff have been “promoted” is actually them just slapping “Senior” in front of titles after a year or two with a 3% pay increase but no actual increase in role or responsibility to hide the lack of upward mobility. All in all, staff are very jaded and mostly killing time looking for a way out. It’s a shame, because there are some great people on the team being totally wasted.

Pros

Americares is a genuinely mission-driven organization where you have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference while working alongside some incredibly talented and passionate colleagues. The people are what make this organization special, there is deep technical expertise, a collaborative culture, and a shared commitment to improving health for communities affected by poverty and disaster. I've had opportunities to grow professionally, lead strategic initiatives around quality, impact and learning and work across a diverse global portfolio. The organization also offers flexibility through remote and hybrid working, which has been invaluable in supporting work-life balance while collaborating with colleagues around the world. One of the things I value most is that Americares is a highly reflective organization. It doesn't pretend to have all the answers; instead, it continually learns, adapts, and looks for ways to improve. If you're someone who enjoys solving complex problems, working with exceptional people, and contributing to meaningful change, it's a very rewarding place to build a career.

Cons

As with many growing nonprofits, some organizational systems and processes continue to evolve. This means there are opportunities to help shape how work gets done, but it also requires flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to work in an environment committed to continuous improvement. The positive side is that you'll be surrounded by talented colleagues who are genuinely invested in making the organization stronger.
