Pros
Excellent benefits - 401k, full medical, dental, vision, management gets defined benefit, not under Social Security, under Railroad retirement board - which regardless of what the Republicans say to try and scare the public is fully funded by the railroads and the employees, NOT taxpayer money, people tend to get the railroad under their skin and stay forever. VERY safety oriented, concerned about the physical welfare of the employees and everyone going home at the end of the day. Some of the cons listed below are being worked on but not aggressively, especially when things are thrown in management's face.
Cons
Does not pay market value, not even close to the median in the managerial realm; agreement covered employees are paid very well. Management doesn't walk what they talk, there tends to be the Amtrak Social Security plan where they allow low performing people to continue to work there because..well, they only have a couple more years till retirement. Management side is kept guessing as to what is going on with upper management and what they are going to do regarding restructuring. It's all about what can you do for Amtrak, not a symbiotic relationship - what can you both do for each other.
