Pros

Allowed remote working during COVID, railroad pension is still very solid. The railroad industry is an important part of our nation's heritage.

Cons

It used to be an awesome company to work for, not so much anymore. Amtrak hires random people off the street to manage the company. The senior leadership back east harasses and attacks long time managers, and replaces them with their friends. Take a look at the high level managers (Sr. Manager on up), most have no experience or knowledge of the industry. The former CEO (Richard Anderson) targeted the long term managers, to try and replace them any way possible. I saw my colleagues get harassed, lied about, fired, forced into early retirement, etc. They would then be replaced with friends of the higher-ups. You can easily see this when you take a look at their background. You'll see clusters of people from completely non-related companies (Hertz Rental Car, AOL, etc.). It's a subtle form of nepotism. Ask how many of them were fired for falsifying reports, etc. An astute observer would question how these people are qualified to manage people who have worked in the industry for 20+ years. They drastically over-pay these people to do almost nothing. I call them the "Theatrical Class" of manager, they can't do crap, and don't know crap, but they use all the right buzz words to create warm fuzzy feelings for their audience. The C-level leadership is mainly composed of actors and actresses. I was supervised by people who didn't even know how to use email. Can you imagine a Sr. Director not knowing how to use email in the year 2020? The CEO's main focus seems to be to get rid of as many employees as possible. It seems like it would make more sense to get rid of a completely useless "Sr. Director" making $180K per year, than a few mechanics or train engineers. One example of this horrible decision making: Getting rid of decent, freshly prepared food for the long-haul routes?! Who would pay that much money just to eat out of a microwave?

Pros

Great friends and Travel with plenty to see

Cons

The culture is horrible it’s a very demeaning please. They will fire you for anything. Harassment amongst employees and by management to their employees Is extremely high. I have a MBA degree and I still can not move above the customer service level. I’m a union member and you have to pay union dues to work a non management position. The union Reps work for Amtrak to so there is a conflict of interest. The union is TCU in which they defend the company 100x harder than they do their members. TCU is not organized very well. The pay is fairly well but after union dues in medical and taxes are withdrawn your net income makes it look like you are making at least 15 to 17 an hr. As far as Work culture at Amtrak it is fueled by many rumors and those rumors are more affluent then your resume .
