Pros

* For the most part the people there were very friendly and supportive. There is a reason why Appian is rated the best place to work. * The office is beautiful, I would not mind being in person at all. Aside from free snacks and discounted food, it is so comfortable and productive being in the office. * The director at that time I was there was truly an inspiration. So many of the other team members are also dedicated and talented. * I felt fairly compensated throughout, although the unlimited PTO was not a thing.

Cons

* As others commented, the product is just horrible. It is the most buggy and inefficient solution out there. They needed an entire department of "solution engineering" that is just the scapegoat of a failed product design. * The solution engineering role is the most time-wasting pit new grads fall into. Everyone there is a new grad including the "managers", you will not learn anything useful that can be applied outside of Appian because no one has real-world experience outside of Appian junk. * Bad work-life balance for solution eng. Long hours on weekdays and weekends. Unlimited PTO is a scam, it is really up to your inexperienced manager to give you time off. Leaving that soul-sucking job was the best decision I made * This is a pure tech support role. There is no engineering of any kind in this department, don't let them play you. This may not be a con if that is what you're looking for. But know that in many countries you won't legally be able to call yourself an engineer. * Overall I think Appian is good, but I would avoid the solution eng department at all cost

Appian Response

Positive feedback like this is valuable and appreciated. It's wonderful to hear that you found the people at Appian to be supportive and friendly, contributing to its reputation as a great workplace. The inviting office environment, coupled with amenities like free snacks and discounted food, evidently made for a comfortable and productive workspace. It's fantastic to hear that your Director and team members were sources of inspiration and talent. We’d love to address some of your concerns below. While the perception of software bugs is subjective, we understand concerns raised. Our commitment to customer success is reflected in significant investments in our support function, not because of software issues, but to assist customers effectively. Our strong revenue retention rate (119%) and high customer satisfaction (>94% with top rating of "Very Satisfied") indicate our dedication to supporting our clients through any challenges they encounter. Starting a career as a new grad in our software company provides unmatched opportunities for deep technical expertise and direct engagement with customers, fostering growth in various directions. Our Solution Engineers don't just learn Appian technology; they work with a diverse range of technologies, paving the way for career advancement beyond our company. We work across a wide range of technologies: Cloud Computing, Relational Databases, Networking, Kubernetes, Elastic Search, Kafka, Automation, AI, etc. We acknowledge weekends can be challenging at times as it can be with any company. Solution Engineers typically participate in one on-call rotation per quarter to ensure we're able to support our customer's needs. Our PTO plan is unlimited, and we rarely deny requests. Our team's primary focus is to deliver technical support and cloud services to our customers, partners, and employees. The role is unique and not strictly a software engineering role. During the hiring process, our goal is to ensure that the role is the right fit for the candidate who is in consideration. It's a great opportunity to gain valuable experience with development, customer service, and expand your skills by partnering with other departments to uncover solutions. This is also a team that consistently scores high in our employee satisfaction surveys.
