Toxic workplace due to management - Product Owner Ascend Learning Employee Review

Pros

Much of the staff is dedicated and helpful. The small tech company I worked at was bought by Ascend. It had a similar vibe to a video game studio, where much of development staff would likely be working if that industry was bigger in NY.

Cons

Turnover is through the roof. No one stays longer than a couple years, and for good reason. Employees are talked down to and taken advantage of. Self-serving climbers take advantage of how out of touch management is to secure roles for themselves at the expense of competent staff. Upper management is broken beyond repair. Some are incompetent hires only around due to nepotism. Some are self-important bullies. Giant parent corporation constantly lies to employees to cheat them out of benefits and opportunities. HR is their tool to do so.

Pros

Decent benefits Hybrid WFH schedule Some really great direct managers

Cons

Chaotic and disorganized, with old outdated backend systems. Work performance and output not generally recognized: people who do very little work are often paid the same, or more than people who do double or triple the workload, and are allowed to continue with the company while other shoulder the load. Once you are on a team or part of a BU - good luck making a move to another team or BU. The place is a revolving door for a lot of positions, but once you learn a skillset they are unlikely to allow a move. The sales team runs this place, so be prepared to be bullied constantly by them, even when you are told to gatekeep.
