Pros

Being a PSM entitles you to higher pay than a redshirt. If alone with a red shirt in the store, you primarily stay inside while red shirt does all parkinglot duties (CEL checks, instal batteries, etc) You have more freedom when it comes to returns or anything that requires a password approval. Your ceiling is much higher, there are many more things you can do/learn than just being marginalized to just helping customers and stocking shelves like a redshirt. Good starter job and if you get promoted to PSM it looks great on your resume.

Cons

The pay was only $2 more than the lowest rank in the company (redshirt) and the responsibilities warranted wayyyy more money than that. You're pressured to sell BS "add-on" products and are reprimanded when you don't meet the sales quota. Hours get cut due to seasons (winter slows down so less hours for everyone who isn't full time). There's a lot and I mean ALOT of politics in the company (who you know will take you where you want to go). Stingy with how many hours are allowed to each store, for example: every store needs at least 2 ppl on the clock at all times but even when it's busiest on weekends, the system will only allow 2 ppl to run the entire store. On top of cashing out a line of customers, you then have to install a battery (for free) do a check engine light (for free) pull the overstock (no exceptions this is done every day) and then keep the store in tip-top shape. All of this with only 2 people. It can be VERYYYYY stressful. They don't support their employees as much as they should either, they will ALWAYS side with the customer (FYI the customer isn't always right. Wait til you get a hostile rude customer and work in a hard part of town and this customer is just being a straight ***** bag bc he's just having a bad day) . Rotating hours suck too.

Pros

Pros Automotive Knowledge & Skill Development: It is an excellent environment to expand your knowledge of vehicle components, diagnostic tools, and automotive troubleshooting.Customer Interaction: If you enjoy solving problems, the role offers regular opportunities to deliver high-impact customer service (what AutoZone calls "WOW!" customer service) by helping DIYers get their vehicles back on the road. Networking & Community Connection: You frequently interact with local mechanics, DIY hobbyists, and commercial accounts, building strong professional relationships within the regional automotive community. Clear Operational Structure: The store protocols, inventory systems, and safety compliance expectations are highly structured, making daily tasks predictable and organized. Employee Discount: Workers receive a company discount on parts, tools, and accessories, which is a major perk if you maintain your own fleet of vehicles.

Cons

ConsFast-Paced & Physically Demanding: The environment can be intense and requires significant physical stamina. Employees spend a lot of time standing, walking, and lifting heavy parts (like commercial batteries and brake rotors) throughout their shifts. Retail Hours & Scheduling: Retail schedules can be demanding, often requiring flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays to accommodate peak store hours.Handling Difficult Customer Situations: Because customers often come in stressed about their broken-down vehicles, employees must be skilled at de-escalating tense situations and managing complaints professionally. Split Responsibilities: Staff members frequently have to alternate between multiple distinct tasks—such as inventory auditing, commercial account delivery, and front-counter retail sales—requiring a strong ability to multi-task and switch gears quickly.
