Pros

The clients. I loved working with the clients.

Cons

Incredibly poor leadership and management within Wealth Management business during my time. Leadership demonstrated a complete absence of understanding for (or interest in) the realities of the company as it went about imposing its vision for the future. The narcissism and self-interest at the top directly and indirectly drove huge amounts of turnover over a five-year period, which resulted in the loss of critically valuable institutional knowledge. This cultural cleansing of those representing yesteryear paved the way for incoming hires who, while often well intentioned, were tasked with implementing the un-implementable. Inevitably, teams would run time and time again into dead-end initiatives. The resulting U-turns and pivots led a constant stream of contradictory top-down messaging, wasted hours and total disillusionment among staff. Regrettably, as the business continues to atrophy, there remain many good people at the company. They deserve better.

Pros

There is real opportunity for career and skill growth. The company runs short on head count, so people willing to take on more responsibilities have avenues to progress. However, you will need to force the issue for promotions & large salary increases after you prove your capabilities. Realistically it'll take an external counteroffer to move the needle.

Cons

It's a large bank and you're a number in the system. If your NPV is positive you'll stay, else you'll be laid off. This includes both scenarios you control and those you don't. Ex. You control your performance, in office time and networking You don't control if your location is a strategic growth site, if a major client goes with a competitor, or if you'd be impacted by a general company-wide layoff plan.
