Pros

The HR team members were always helpful, great to talk to, and made the department fun to be part of. Everyone on that team was always willing to help each other out when needed and it was easy to ask questions if you weren't sure of something.

Cons

Benefits: It would have cost around $800/ month for me to insure myself and my spouse. That would have been equal to me losing a third of my take home pay every month. No built in holidays for admin staff: We had to use our own PTO bank to take off holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. In an admin role we can't make calls or reach out to people on those holidays so it makes no sense to not automatically have that day off. Salary: I started at Balance in February of 2022 and was making $18.25/hour, on my yearly review I was bumped to $18.89/hour, but when my long time teammate was leaving they brought in her replacement with less experience, at a higher wage than me. My wage was then bumped to $19.00/hour. When I asked for a raise to make more than the newer person, my boss told me to wait a month because there was more people on the payroll. The raise I would have settled for would have cost Balance $40 additional a month, but instead I put in my notice and they are now paying my replacement more than I would have settled for. Thankfully, I am now making more than their directors in my new role with just 3 years of Recruiting experience. Adult Services Program Manager position: Just don't take this role.... It's awful hours for barely livable pay and with the staffing issues for DSP's in all healthcare organizations they work a lot more than 40 hours a week. While I was there, most Program Managers tenure was less than a year. Communication: When a new policy or procedure is being rolled out communication to various departments and their role in it is lacking. Most of the time we didn't know about a change or what our role in it would be until it was last minute. Resignation Notice Period: For salaried worker they have to provide 4 weeks notice to get their PTO pay out and hourly has to give 3 weeks notice. I had a decent amount of PTO so I did it, but holding the PTO ransom like that sucked.

Pros

Continued opportunities to grow. As a non-profit it also means that these positions aren't always visible, but instead are opened as the agency grows and needs support in different ways.

Cons

Sometimes the stress of the impact we can have is a lot, not a con for Balance Autism, but a good reminder about the Human Service field. Thinking about how we support ourselves in good stress management is important, but also seeking out others (in and outside the organization) for this is support is also ideal.
