Pros
Great way to learn about teaching and whether you want to pursue a career in education. My supervisors gave me terrific support and I had a great relationship with my supervisors, fellows, and other co-workers at the school. I also made great connections with students and became inspired to continue into a career in teaching. I feel like I made terrific friends here that I want to keep in my life and learned skills that I know I will be able to use in the classroom in the future. I am also looking forward to paying off some loans with the Americorps educational award I will get upon completion of my year.
Cons
This is challenging but rewarding work. We did a ton of professional development and reflection so be prepared to really get to work. Also, know that you will be working with kids who have been educationally disadvantaged so be prepared to spend a lot of time filling gaps in their knowledge and trying to work them up to grade level. Also, the pay is adequate to live in Denver but pretty low.
