Pros
I enjoy working with students and I feel as thought I have made an impact - if not academically, perhaps, socially.
Cons
I was hired for $21,000 for a one year salary. (Not even remotely a living wage) After the year began, I was told that the salary is pro-rated over a 13 month period. This makes a ridiculously low wage even worse. I understood that I would be tutoring students in math. We are actually full-blown teachers with all of the responsibilities for lesson planning, data collection, classroom management, etc. As if this isn't enough, we are also asked to do school-related chores such as lunch/recess duty. This is absolutely ludicrous given that we are salaried (sort of) employees. In the beginning, I often found myself lugging home a laptop to complete tasks at home because my work day was filled with laughably poor training and extraneous duties. My supervisor has asked me repeatedly what she can do to help me. To every suggestion, the reply is "Well that is not going to happen!" This program is so poorly run that standards for measuring performance are constantly changing, certain duties are emphasized and then discarded and communication from management is negligible. While the Math Fellows are held to absurdly high standards, management is not. I can honestly state that this has been one of the worst working experiences I have ever had. If you are considering becoming a Fellow, run for the hills or to the nearest coffee shop where I am certain that the baristas make a better wage! I feel totally used and abused....
