Pros

-I was lucky to work in a school where there were a total of 8 math fellows, and we formed a very supportive team that made the many challenges more manageable. -This was my first job out of college and it is well-suited for that. You gain a LOT of professional experience that will help you in almost any direction (and make you sound pretty impressive). -Was able to build strong and productive relationships with my students -Excellent gateway into education (whether or not you have much prior experience). This job will help you be more confidant as a teacher, and you will learn a lot about what works and what doesn't work in education reform.

Cons

-This program is still trying to figure itself out, so there were a lot of drastic changes throughout the year that made things difficult for students and fellows. -The same lack of consistency made it difficult for us to be effective as we should have been. -Host school often used the math fellows to fill positions and do work that was not in our job description and that we were not adequately prepared for. For example, we were required to sacrifice our planing periods to teach an MCAS (standardized test) prep class without any guidance, which ended up being quite ineffective.

Thank You for Your Service in Oakland Thank you for sharing your experience and for the three years you dedicated to our students in Oakland. It is wonderful to hear that you found your time as a Lead Math Fellow rewarding and that you felt supported by your colleagues. Your commitment played a vital role in helping our students build their math skills and confidence. We appreciate your honesty regarding the daily realities of working in a classroom. Supporting students through the challenges of adolescence requires immense patience and resilience. We aim to ensure our Fellows feel equipped for these moments through ongoing coaching and collaborative team support, and we value the grace you showed in navigating those disruptions to keep the focus on learning. Regarding your feedback on compensation, we understand the importance of balancing mission-driven work with the cost of living, particularly in the Bay Area. We are continuously looking for ways to enhance the overall Fellow experience—including professional development and AmeriCorps benefits like the Segal Education Award—to ensure our team feels valued for the incredible impact they make. Thank you again for your hard work and for being a part of the Blueprint community. We wish you the very best in your next chapter!
