Great culture among peers, but only good for transition into nonprofit world - Anonymous employee Braille Institute Employee Review

1) Even when you are in an admin role, being around people being helped in real, tangible ways every day makes you feel good. 2) Really good 403b match compared to other NGOs I've worked at 3) New employee resource groups around blindness and neurodiversity 4) I've worked for a ton of nonprofit organizations. This is the first time I've seen a strategic plan that is both aggressive, yet realistic. 5) Because we don't get federal dollars, we have not felt the turmoil other nonprofits have gone though. This is a very steady organization.

The organization is going through some long-overdue changes to bring us up to date and that can be hard. Some of the senior staff were let go recently, which didn't always land well. As a result, I think some of my colleagues feel it. Since most of that happened as part of phase I of a new strategic plan, I'm hoping things settle down and time will heal all, but we'll see.

Red tape, weak benefits and family leave policies, increasing culture of suspicion and staff reporting on each other for minor issues, increasing job instability due to cuts. The new CEO was great for the first year or two but lost his way. I don't disagree with any of the reviews about greater transparency until earlier this year; we were building a team with great potential and had a good plan for building national remote programs as well as strong programs at our centers. There was also some work on diversity initiatives including a better culture for blind employees. but now dozens of staff members have been let go, sometimes suddenly and with no stated reason, and many of the positive improvements to regional centers such as transportation support are gone.
