Pros
- Teaching is fun. Great for some worldly work experience. - It's a center, not meeting in a public library or the student's house. Consistency is nice. - The center provides plenty of materials to keep the most unprepared students (and teachers, hah!) busy. - Connecting with students gives an opportunity to understand the educational system. - Great working hours for those who thrive at night.
Cons
- If you have no students for your assigned hours, you don't receive payment, even if it's a last minute cancellation. While policy says otherwise, the client is usually not charged to maintain a customer relationship. - Alas, those with the skills to be subject experts in the math and sciences are likely to look away from educational jobs for better compensation. I was forced to look for a "real" technical position for consistent pay and existent benefits. - I'm noticing a relatively high turnover rate among management, but not among the tutors. They're stressed, having to juggle multiple students with outdated technology.
