Pros
The individual center directors have a lot of say in the working lives of their tutors, so experiences from town to town might vary. The director at my center is good; she runs interference between teachers and parents, holds meetings so that teachers can compare notes, and listens to suggestions. She relies on her tutors for most of the academic direction. My regional trainer, educational director, and VP also involve themselves in major issues and are willing to listen to suggestions. Teachers who put forth the effort can expand their horizons (i.e. teach an SAT Boot Camp, start book clubs, work on projects). The company encourages suggestions from its tutors. The pay is decent; it’s not as much as one-on-one, in-home tutoring, but you don’t have to worry so much about hours. The curriculum for high-school students is great.
Cons
Tutors have to be flexible; a class of three can have a third-grader learning basic sentence structure, an eighth-grader working on an essay, and a senior trying to ace the SAT. This can be stressful and requires an ability to plan and alter that plan according to need. Tutors are judged according to two factors: student success and classroom fun. Balancing these can be tricky. The regional trainers mention the pros and cons in detail during the interview. Listen to them before deciding if the job is for you. I have seen teachers who struggle with and complain about the very things they have been warned would happen.
