Pros

I really enjoy helping people, so I have been happy to help students with their work or test preparation. The other tutors at the center also seem fond of helping students learn, so it makes for a non-competitive, mutual work environment among co-workers. Our center director tries to make our—the tutors'—lives as easy as possible by dealing with parents and other issues that arise outside of the session. Scheduling is flexible, so if I have to miss a day next week, I just need to inform the director.

Cons

But it's also bad that the schedule is flexible. I never know what my schedule is like until the day of, and still it is NOT final. The parents make the calls and we must heed their orders, even if they were against company policy. While policy states that students are required to schedule sessions at least 24 hours prior, I've been constantly thrust with new students who just called in to have a session that day, so planning for sessions beforehand—as ordered to do so during training—wasn't practical. In addition to the challenge of handling three students simultaneously, there are those last-minute, call-in student who wants to start learning before I even get a chance to prepare. Sigh... With regards to the students, the world isn't perfect. There are good (hard-working, not necessarily smart) and bad (lazy) students. The majority of bad students either expect lofty results without putting in the necessary work or do not complete assigned work. And when we throw stubborn parents in the mix, we got a massive headache. It's tough to extract results under the quixotic demands of parents who expect good results by throwing money at the problem, which is the direct result of poor parenting and neglect. Also, I find myself constantly working past my shift because the students need their work done (i.e., something is happening/due tomorrow) without compensation. Is MY time not valued?
