Pros
I joined Cabela's over a year ago and one thing is consistent. They hire people who have deep expertise on the topics they're hired for and most of the folks are a pleasure to work with. The pay is a little better than average for retail, but I was hired in Powersports which had a lower hourly wage, but a commission structure to make up for it.
Cons
Since the Bass Pro acquisition, everything is about cutting costs and one can already see the quality of new merchandise begin to decline. For those of us in Powersports, Bass Pro eliminated any commission which effectively reduced our pay rate by well over 50%. The Tracker products, compared to Cabela's previous products, are inferior. Their market is strictly a low price market. Quality is a distant second or third consideration. The other thing they don't tell you when you get hired is the importance of pushing the Cabela's Visa card. This is THE most important issue every day for in-store managers and outfitters. Every hour the employees are given an update on how many visa card applications have been made and you are evaluated on how many generate. It turns out that the retail business is ONLY profitable because of the credit card business. In the end, that's what you're selling every day. A credit card.
