Pros

Excellent research, status, and network Can live on a stipend Housing is decent and about half of market price, which is a big deal in Pasadena

Cons

The point about being able to live on a stipend is only if you're in perfect health and have no dependents If you need to get anything from admin, you're in for years of struggling; nobody in admin communicates with anybody else, except apparently to stonewall requests or compliance

Pros

Experience depends on Department and Professor. HSS is supportive of their employees, some great admins. Career development programs and other educational opportunities. Lots of brilliant researchers. Grad student and postdoc union.

Cons

The university is no longer supportive of HSS. Salary is typical for this position, which is bad. Departments are somewhat siloed, not so much collaboration. Federal funding cuts are having bad effects on operations and research.
