Pros

The folks in the branches were the only reason I stayed there so long

Cons

Where to begin? Nepotism with the CEO especially is absurd and don’t understand how it’s legal, he doesn’t even try to hide the fact he hires his own family members and buddies. the CEO is some how allowed to hire his own family members but doesn’t allow it for anyone else. The hiring practices should really be investigated by the state as jobs have been created out of thin air and given to people without any due process - The executives spend lavishly on themselves with retreats and parties and spends thousands on extravagant parties for their board members. They somehow have money to spend on sponsoring all the sports but their branches look like Cold War relics and the technology in the branches is the same. They preach culture constantly but the good ole boy club is still alive and well and if you don’t make it in you’re cut off completely. - Back office is where the hypocrisy is at the most where leaders constantly talk about culture but you never even seen them in their own department. But hey, at least the office has some low grade snacks to make you feel better! -The CEO tries to portray himself off as humble and approachable but he is just like every other crooked executive out there and only cares about himself and his group. It was so much better working when it was PSCU and the members would agree. - they call us family members in some weird cult like fashion but dispose of their best employees without a hesitation - they like to trash other banks and credit unions in the area but are so hypocritical they don’t realize how petty and insecure they look

Canvas Credit Union Response

This is Ryan Brown, VP of People and Culture and I’ve been with Canvas since 2016. We always welcome feedback on how we can get better. Know that my door is always open to chat and answer any HR related questions. Please feel free to reach out at ryanb@canvas.org. Todd Marksberry became Canvas’ president & CEO seven years ago. In addition to proven operational and strategic capabilities, Todd brought with him a fierce commitment to recruiting and retaining people who share values such as empathy, authenticity, and service to others. We call our employees “family members” because we believe it helps set the tone for how we treat each other. We invite our talented friends and family to come join us on this journey, but only if they serve a business need and are willing to give their all to serve our members. We hire and promote people based on clearly defined behaviors and performance outcomes. Hiring managers partner with our internal recruiting team to identify behaviors which are most likely to lead to success. We then build job-specific and behavior-based questions around DDI’s Targeted Selection process. Internal applicants undergo an even more extensive vetting process which includes demonstrated success at Canvas and leadership references. All job postings are posted internally for a minimum of three days. Each year, we proudly promote one in four people at Canvas (185 of 700 in 2021)! Our rebrand from PSCU to Canvas was the start of a new chapter for our credit union. We invest in what our members and family members tell us matter most. These include people, technology, and facilities. We’ve since completed 13 remodels and have 7 currently under construction. For our branches which have not been remodeled, our Canvas Consultants stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our members too. Lastly, it’s true that Canvas knows how to party. Whether it’s our Christmas parties, our upcoming Great Place to Work parties, or the many other opportunities for us to fellowship, innovate, and plan for how we can get better, spending time with one another has proven instrumental to building our unique culture. There is a strong business case in investing in these gatherings, especially coming out of global pandemic. A people-first culture cannot be nurtured via Zoom. We realize Canvas is not for everyone, and we know that people with a desire to grow, care for others, and an openness to be vulnerable is what makes Canvas a certified Great Place to Work. As Todd says to our new hires: “If you don’t like people, if you don’t like being around people, and caring for people, you probably are not going to like it here.” Our growth and member and employee surveys have proven that this approach works.

Pros

The compensation is the only genuinely positive aspect of this position.

Cons

Nonexistent Training: You are set up to fail from the start with a complete lack of proper training and ongoing leadership support. Management Dodges Work: Managers actively avoid doing their jobs. They will outright refuse to take escalation calls, leaving frontline staff to fend for themselves. Unexplained Discipline: Leadership hands out write-ups with absolutely zero explanation or constructive feedback, creating an environment of anxiety and confusion. Toxic Culture: Internal teams openly disrespect one another, creating a completely dysfunctional and frustrating day-to-day dynamic. Customer Frustration: Due to complete lack of hard turn times here members will basically be spam calling you as processing drops the ball constantly, and underwriting can’t make a sound decision to save their lives.
