Cepheid just went through a 2nd major staff reduction this year. Most of middle management in many areas was cut. This resulted in the remaining hourly employees taking on additional work and reporting to directors who are already overloaded and in some cases possess little knowledge of the day to day processes and procedures of the additional staff they now oversee. Areas within Cepheid operate with a silo mentality where management competes for resources and attention. There is a lack of coordination at the Director level often resulting conflicting goals. In some cases Directors publicly criticizing each other’s decisions and work in distribution list style emails. Commitments are made without including subject matter experts who know what is involved in getting projects completed. Leaving gaps that pull resources away from fundamental day to day operations. The general fear is that if you don’t say “yes” you will be part of the next cut. 3 presidents in 3 years each with a different path forward.
