Cepheid has had a long history of Laying off employees during some market downturns, but once in a while there are some good market conditions and you would only observe management getting promoted all the time and not individual contributors. The Leadership has failed terribly to strategize a long-term growth plan for this company which has repeatedly resulted in poor company performance - and eventually leads to layoffs, again Individual contributors suffer and the same management stays. This vicious cycle has resulted in a culture that fosters favoritism in teams and management. Highly recommend to skip any opportunity at Cepheid.
