Cons
Egregious pay inequity: New hires are sometimes getting paid $30K+ more to do the exact same job, or even lower level jobs. Great for new hires, astonishingly unfair for the people who have to train them. Anxiety driven fire drill leadership: Every single project is a high priority rush. Individuals are constantly switching back and forth between several projects that they are being told are all a rush, with few exceptions. Continuous on edge anxiety is common throughout departments. On call for holidays…for pet content?: There is absolutely no reason this is necessary. Marketing is not IT or supply chain. Abysmal onboarding: You will be thrown into the fire in week 1, I guarantee it. Terribly unorganized training compounded by constant meetings leads to clueless new hires who never learn processes before getting assigned things. Managers don’t know processes well enough to train and expect lower level employees to do it for them. Micromanagement culture: Get ready to watch Slack like a hawk all day, and be watched and analyzed for every word you say. If you take “too long” to respond (20 min?) you will get follow up messages. Your calendar will also be full of meetings, so be prepared to watch people visibly multi-task while paying no attention on calls. Stubborn and difficult stakeholders: These folks will berate the work of project managers, individual executors (designers, video editors, etc), producers, and anyone in their way. Notes for the sake of making notes because stakeholders (who are internal to Chewy) absolutely must get their way, and they must get it *right now.* Impossible to get promoted: Once you start, enjoy a small amount of equity that’s currently worth nothing, and a ridiculous review cycle that seems put in place to punish those who have been with the company for any significant amount of time. Unless you “exceed expectations” on every single task you do, obsess over the companies “operating principles” and suck up to poor leadership, good luck getting anything more than a 2-4% raise that doesn’t even line up with inflation. Pushing back in office: The company is spending an enormous amount of money on a new HQ that is opening later this year, so naturally they seem to be gravitating toward forcing people back into the office at least part time regardless of whether or not your job can be done fully remote. Leadership refuses to ask people what they want or consider how they feel about it. Chewy is great for customers, but toxic for most employees. Do not buy into the culture the company panders endlessly on social media — it died within a couple years after Ryan Cohen left.
