Pros
There are a few genuine and caring people left - ones who are compassionate for others and want to do what is best.
Cons
Over 90% of Director and VP leadership are (mediocre players) from Amazon, baited over with inflated responsibilities and put in charge of teams they have no business leading. These leaders grind their strongest employees and take all the credit to win at politics. The great culture and place to work is gone. The old Chewy leaders and managers have left, replaced by Amazon. The stock price has been dropping since the pandemic and will not stop dropping. there’s a reason why they give so much stock and so little cash, despite the stock price promises your recruiters will say. Check the active customer count - Chewy has been losing Active Customers every year. The business is shrinking. Toxic positivity, funded by employee engagement, employer branding, and HR is intentional and meant to cover up culture that is worsening. There is no work life balance, and all of your work is little to no value add. You’ll be spending all your time writing docs for C-Suite for one of their pet projects, massaging a narrative that they want to hear. You won’t have any time leftover doing real work or investing in your teams and people. The company has been squeezing every penny, it started first with its non exempt employees and then its exempt employees. It’s now hitting customers - the bottom line and earnings call is the only priority, not customers like Chewy used to be. The belief at the top is that employees can and should be replaced. It’s a very slippery slope til you believe customers are too. Everyone is frantically trying to hit their metrics and will even misreport or lie to do so. Recruiting will lie to candidates to hit their SLAs, business units will misreport their performance, because of the immense pressure, distrust, and fear. Employee turnover is terrible - go on LinkedIn and check the tenure for current or ex Chewy employees. Top talent will stay for just a year (for their stock to vest) and then leave - even with nothing else lined up! The tech and infrastructure are terrible. Because the leadership is so short sighted on immediate ROI, there is no long term strategy or investment. Nothing is built to scale or last, and there are corners cut at every opportunity (almost zero dev and test environments exist). Tech leadership is weak and senior leadership invests in the bare minimum to keep things running. Performance and year end calibrations are seriously flawed. Only senior leaders are involved. Those who do the most and are too busy to kiss up lose. Those who do the least and invest all their time “managing up” get rewarded and promoted.
