Pros

Looks good on your resume, many intelligent coworkers

Cons

Low pay compared to demands and expected work hours. Decent PTO but you can barely use any of it due to work expectations. Most managers are not fit to be effective leaders. Many will get the position without knowing how to support their team members in complex tasks or advocating for them when upper management are making unreasonable demands. Ironically, many managers have difficulty managing their own emotions and stress and often transfer it to those working underneath them. Employees are not set up to be successful in their work tasks (high demands, limited time, no guidance, punitive environment). Many people feel undervalued. There are limited means of providing feedback. Employees are often silenced or threatened when leadership doesn’t like the feedback and then are blamed for the issues they are speaking up about. Once that happens, that line of communication is closed or employees are told that the issues are already “under careful review” and therefore no further discussion is necessary. There is a culture that praises those who work to exhaustion but no one acknowledges it. You’ll hear a lot of superficial remarks about self care, setting boundaries, and having realistic expectations for yourself but then you’ll be labeled as an under-performer if you actually do these things. And you bet you’ll be receiving messages and emails up until late at night. So much of the work is important but the focus is too much on publicity and churning out many new ideas/projects that are halfway completed versus improving the initiatives that have already begun.

Pros

Some very smart minds working here

Cons

- Extremely toxic work culture - Senior Leadership have no strategy. They chase good PR to the detriment of the health of their teams. - All power stems from the top. It changes like the wind and is not anchored in the mission or evidence. If you are not kowtowing to the leader, you are let go and without any respect to what you have contributed. This can be seen in the C-suite changing constantly over the past year. - Resource allocation prioritizes senior leadership salaries, which negatively impacts delivery of programs and services. This also illustrates to anybody wanting to invest or fund that it is not a good place for ROI. - Extremely high turnover is a reflection of toxic HR and senior leadership.
