Pros

The children and babies are really cute, which can make the job rewarding at times. You have the option to decline assignments if you don’t want to go.

Cons

The points system is frustrating and unfair. You get 1 point for accepting a school assignment but lose 3 points for declining. This punishes you heavily for saying no and doesn’t fairly reward you for accepting assignments. It essentially acts as a harsh attendance penalty. Placement coordinators are not supportive and will keep sending you assignments at schools you’ve declined, seemingly trying to make you lose points until you feel forced to accept. Assignments sometimes are outside of reasonable travel ranges, with little regard for your safety or comfort. When I raised concerns about a school in a sketchy neighborhood, it was dismissed. Many schools lack leadership and the permanent staff can be resentful toward CCC substitutes, making the work environment uncomfortable. The company encourages reporting schools that try to recruit subs directly because those schools have to pay a fee to CCC—this feels like a conflict of interest. The job is very unreliable in terms of hours. Recruiters may promise steady or full-time hours, but in reality, it’s inconsistent and unpredictable. I had to move back home because I couldn’t cover rent without steady hours. CCC does not effectively protect its substitutes and tends to side with the childcare centers in disputes. No benefits, No paid lunch.
