Pros

This was my first job in the animal care industry, and I did get some good basic knowledge of what it’s like to work in this field. I also developed great relationships with my coworkers and gained some customer service skills that I was previously lacking.

Cons

Any workplace has problems, but the problems at CityVet are way out of proportion. Most employees will quit or be fired just after their new hire period, leading to the company being very under staffed and the remaining employees having to work 5+ hours of overtime every week, while the manager picks up no extra hours and often leaves early or doesn’t come in at all. I was really drawn to this company by the type of business they claim to run on their website, but their words just do not add up to the way they actually do things behind the scenes. Our location has had several evaluations regarding the high turn over rate and we’ve had meeting after meeting about how to improve our business, yet nothing has truly changed. As a lower employee you feel very helpless and belittled because you don’t know what your manager is saying about you behind your back, or when/ why you might get fired, and anything you have to say to upper management about it goes virtually ignored. Oh, and you can kiss your days of calling out sick goodbye- as per company policy you have to come in to work regardless of how sick you are unless you have someone to cover your shift, which is highly unlikely because most people will already be working since there’s so few employees and your manager will not cover for you... even if you quit/ get fired because of this you can bet the manager will still have another employee that’s already working pick up the slack instead of covering for you themself. And some thing that I wish I had known when applying here is that local vets and other animal industry employers in the area will see you working at CityVet to be even worse than having no experience because the customer reviews are just that bad. Please, save yourself the hassle and do not apply here.

Pros

One of CityVet's greatest strengths is its servant-minded leadership. Leaders are genuinely invested in supporting veterinarians and their teams, providing the resources and guidance needed to help them succeed. If you want to be part of the Hospital Support Team, you must believe in a collaborative, solution driven approach. There are meaningful opportunities for career growth across the organization. Many members of the support team began their careers working in CityVet hospitals, demonstrating the company's commitment to promoting from within and developing its people.

Cons

While CityVet offers significantly more clinical autonomy than many corporate veterinary organizations, it is not the same as being a sole practice owner. Decisions are made through a partnership model that balances individual clinic preferences with the company's overall brand standards and business strategy. If your goal is complete independence in every operational and business decision, this may not be the ideal practice model for you. Unlike many corporate veterinary organizations, CityVet empowers its clinics with a high degree of autonomy. Partner veterinarians are trusted to practice medicine in the way they believe is best for their patients and work collaboratively with leadership, rather than operating under a one-size-fits-all corporate model. This can be a challenge for support when trying to say "Yes" as much as we can without causing issues for other locations.
