Pros

The people are kind and work hard at Columbia.

Cons

Everyone, including executives, are afraid of Tim Boyle. Empowerment is low because he goes so low in managing in the minutia of day to day work. His presence is felt throughout the company and not in a good way. Here are some examples: -Prides himself on making it difficult to hire employees. This causes managers to not feel empowered and hold on to poor performers for fear of not being able to replace them -Placing costs first makes this Columbia a finance company that squashes innovation -Sends numerous messages to the workforce to get vaccinated. He is thrilled with Biden’s announcement. He will mandate without an option to test. He states that he is “bulletproof” because he is vaccinated, which is not true as vaccines do not prevent infection or transmission. It is an irresponsible thing to say and promote. -Turn over is too high because the lack of investments in modernizing which make people have to work harder to get things done. People are tired and burned out -He is a very stubborn man that doesn’t listen to other SME viewpoints. He thinks he is the expert in everything -Not an advocate for diversity, as reflected in the senior leadership team and board of directors. He could care a less about diversity.

Pros

Good work-life balance and benefits.

Cons

What was once a pro for culture has now become a con. Uncertainty due to massive layoffs. Remote work has been largely eliminated, and thus flexibility has decreased signficantly. Offshore and AI initiatives to reduce local US workforce. Although collaboration is encouraged, departments are siloed and operate independently which causes significant inefficiencies costing the company millions of dollars. Diversity is also lacking in a number of departments. Over reliance on external consultants instead of leveraging internal expertise.
