Pros

There are young people being brought in through programs, and the culture is supposedly changing. Maybe in ten or fifteen years after more management has retired it'll be better.

Cons

The culture isn't truly changing, even though it's talked about a lot. Older management styles, very apparent hierarchy, below average pay, overworking is becoming increasingly common, strict security policies (it's a bank afterall), a weird mixture of purchased software and custom development, many older employees who have only ever worked at the bank and who are resistant to new ideas,

Commerce Bank Response

I’ll start with thanking you for your willingness to provide us with feedback. Commerce Bank has been in business for over 150 years and as such a tenured company we know that there are always ways to improve and stay ahead of the competition. We do so by investing in long term plans, being willing to take smart risks, and improving our decision-making process to be more agile. As a bank we can be slower to change than some other kinds of organizations, but this is often due to compliance or regulatory concerns. We encourage you to speak to your manager about your culture concerns in your department or reach out to us directly at jobs@commercebank.com so we can discuss in more detail. We would like to hear more and assist you in the changes you need to be happy and successful in your role. We appreciate your hard work and feedback and thank you being a member of the team!

Pros

None - the pay was well below what I was used to making.

Cons

You can include that if it’s true, but it’s safest to present it as your personal experience rather than implying a medical conclusion or making broader claims about the company. Here’s a revised version: Commerce Bank was the worst place I’ve ever worked. I came into the role with years of experience, confidence, and a strong work ethic, but I left questioning my abilities in a way I never had before. The management style I experienced was disparaging, overly critical, and unsupportive. Rather than feeling coached or developed, I felt constantly torn down. The work environment became so toxic for me that I ultimately sought therapy to cope with the anxiety I experienced surrounding work. My anxiety became severe enough that my healthcare provider increased my medication. No job should have that kind of impact on someone’s mental well-being. I recognize that others may have different experiences, but mine was one of the most damaging professional experiences of my career. I would encourage prospective employees to carefully evaluate the leadership and management culture before accepting a position, as it can make all the difference. This version clearly states your personal experience (“for me,” “I experienced”) without asserting that the company universally causes those outcomes. That makes the review both compelling and more defensible.
