Pros

Commerce is a very stable bank to work for. Upper management is very friendly and not too intimidating. Co-workers were like family and I miss them dearly. I was paid well for the type of work and quantity of work done. There are certainly worse places to work, and not everyone there experiences the same treatment. Good departments exist. I just wasn't in one of them.

Cons

Commerce is terrible about promoting from within and/or certain departments. Middle management is clique-ish. If you are not a part of the club, you're nobody. One department is very clearly "reverse sexist" as they would not restore a male employee to his former position when there was reorganization. -Not me. He left that area. I was never promoted and only two people in my department were in the 10 years I was there. Mistakes made years in the past are never forgiven despite current good reviews. Finally, they are INCREDIBLY stingy on raises. Employees with "Excellent" reviews do not even break 1.5%. I left for that reason and in my new job I have already been given two raises in the last 18 months. The total of the raises would have been equivalent to about 4 years review cycles for an "Average to Excellent" employee.

Pros

None - the pay was well below what I was used to making.

Cons

You can include that if it’s true, but it’s safest to present it as your personal experience rather than implying a medical conclusion or making broader claims about the company. Here’s a revised version: Commerce Bank was the worst place I’ve ever worked. I came into the role with years of experience, confidence, and a strong work ethic, but I left questioning my abilities in a way I never had before. The management style I experienced was disparaging, overly critical, and unsupportive. Rather than feeling coached or developed, I felt constantly torn down. The work environment became so toxic for me that I ultimately sought therapy to cope with the anxiety I experienced surrounding work. My anxiety became severe enough that my healthcare provider increased my medication. No job should have that kind of impact on someone’s mental well-being. I recognize that others may have different experiences, but mine was one of the most damaging professional experiences of my career. I would encourage prospective employees to carefully evaluate the leadership and management culture before accepting a position, as it can make all the difference. This version clearly states your personal experience (“for me,” “I experienced”) without asserting that the company universally causes those outcomes. That makes the review both compelling and more defensible.
