Pros

I have been working at Compass for nearly two years as a sales manager in the northern California region. I have watched as it has grown in the area in both agent count, employee count, and market share to levels not achieved by any brokerage in memory. As of today; SF area market share is 35% while many surrounding areas are approximately 20%. These are astounding metrics that lends itself to an exciting work atmosphere as well. What has inspired me personally from my first days here is the percentage of individuals who simply intrinsically want to better those around them. The desire of both staff and leadership to follow through on making the work atmosphere on where everyone feels a part of a mission together within the overarching concept of building a real estate platform that serves as a starting point for home buyers and sellers nationwide. This is a company where eight principles are put forward as the foundation for both staff and agents; those are to Dream Big, Move Fast, Learn From Reality, Be Solutions Driven, Obsess about Opportunity, Collaborate without Ego, Maximize your Strengths, and to Bounce back with Passion. I would venture to state that working within an atmosphere anchored on these principles is a place where you feel both inspired and proud of what you are a part of. Additionally, our leadership team, emphasized by Robert Reffkin, Maelle Gavat, and Rob Lehman are consistently striving to come up with ways to better what is already on the ground and new ways to innovate to succeed in within the mission statement. I highly recommend Compass for those looking for a company that is transforming the real estate industry.

Cons

I heard a quote early on here from leadership that a company in hyper-growth is comparable to a rocket ship lifting off and there will be some rattling. If you are not someone who likes new ideas and/or the need to learn from reality and recalibrate as needed then this would not register as a place to be.

Pros

Genuinely love working here. So much to learn and do with not many stipulations.

Cons

The management chain takes ages to get things done. Real estate has so many regional nuances that corporate-wide policies often dont affect most regions appropriately.

Pros

People are smart. Very much a “move fast and break things” culture which can be refreshing compared to bureaucracy-heavy corporate life. I don’t agree with their values (if they have any) but what they’re doing is unquestionably working - business outlook is strong.

Cons

Leadership will tell you there’s no ego or self-interest involved in their strategy - that is untrue. It’s an extremely heliocentric culture around the CEO. A lot of the work is based around what people they're guessing he’ll like, but there’s no alignment at the outset and something you worked on for weeks/months will be trashed after one look from him. Their mission is ostensibly about empowering agents but they are solving a problem that pretty much no one was complaining about before they started, and which just so happens to work highly in their favor in terms of market share. It’s just business but very disingenuous- don’t believe the hype that it’s altruistic somehow. Also the CEO loves to share his sob story about his single mother upbringing, but simultaneously enacts some of the most anti-parent policies you could think of.
