Good Compensation and Benefits, but Demanding with Poor Work/Life Balance - Senior Design Engineering Manager Constellation Energy Employee Review

Pros

Compensation is strong for the area and benefits are above average for a large company. Benefits are not as good as they have been previously, however, and are eroding. There are significant opportunities for development and promotion within the company.

Cons

Constellation is a traditionally run large corporation that touts values such as innovation, diversity, and respect on the surface but doesn't commit to those values internally, even at the highest levels in the company. The company is run as a top-down hierarchy and expectations from the top are demanding. Engineers are considered an unlimited resource with no additional compensation for extra hours worked. Thus, individual contributors and low-level managers are not highly valued within the company and work/life balance is severely imbalanced as a result. Be prepared to either dedicate your life to work or be considered a slacker in any salaried position.

Great benefits. Opportunities for advancement.

Cons

Some managers should not be in a position of leadership.

Pros

Coworkers are all intelligent and overall good people to spend 12hrs a day with.

Cons

The department is perpetually understaffed. You’ll never actually work an 8hr shift, because no one is dumb enough to vote for that schedule. There’s not enough operators to fill the schedule without being forced all the time for 16hr shifts. Be prepared to be forced for OT on a regular basis even with a 12hr schedule. If your family is important, then this probably is not a good long-term plan. You’re going to miss sports, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc. You live at work and home is a place you sleep. The company might advertise company holidays, but that just means you get paid a little more for being here on those days.
