Understaffed, appearance oriented, zero trust, low morale, cost-focused - Principal Software Engineer Crown Equipment Employee Review

Pros

Some departments (notably outside engineering) appeared to have better culture and performance. Some decent, open, and honest people.

Cons

Everything is about appearance and reputation. Truth and the customer are regularly sacrificed to maintain these. Watch out, because the social games are brutal around this and the rules are not at all intuitive. There is no clear sense of mission for the company. Crazy understaffing forces you to choose between performing critical maintenance or building a feature crappily, and you may not get time to do either. When something goes south, it’s all about avoiding blame, not fixing the problem, and openly sharing information to that end. Crazy low morale. A truly positive comment was exceedingly rare. Distrust of leadership was high. Leadership lacks the courage to make decisions. They kick the can down the road indefinitely. Tenure is a heavily pushed corporate value. H Thomas Johnson said that “Perhaps what you measure is what you get. More likely, what you measure is all you’ll get. What you don’t (or can’t) measure is lost”. The female dress code is way too detailed and feels like a 1990s fundamentalist pamphlet on modesty - no cold shoulders, really? Its specificity tells you just how much they trust the women they employ to know what is and isn't appropriate. Cost-focused, and myopically so. They could save so much money and make so much money and everyone would be happier if they would just stop looking at the money and invest in their people, equipment, and work environment.

Pros

Fantastic management, positive community vibe, everyone was invested in my learning experience and I felt very welcomed

Cons

tough to achieve anything in my time there due to the nature of the industry. Not their fault just the circumstance and they celebrate the smaller victories so I didn't feel discouraged
