Pros

It was a decent job to start a career, but like many will tell you, get your experience and get out. It was always my intention to get a few years of experience and leave for greener pastures. Just watch out when you do and leave the industry.

Cons

- Be prepared for the middle management in this organization. They hand out titles left and right and will micro-manage you. They do not trust you and are just plain bad at management. I think that comes from the fact that the people in upper/middle management are there because of their tenure, not ability to lead. I found it extremely off-putting when the employees openly discuss how incompetent the leadership is. I was given advice on certain individuals and to avoid them at all costs. This was all coming unsolicited. - Pay is very below average despite what they will try to tell you. I made half of what the market normally paid because I didn't have any experience. Once I started looking for new jobs, I found several that doubled what I was making in the same position. When the CEO has an article in Forbes on "Cheap is the new religion," you should know what to expect!!! - You're going to be working for a Vista Portfolio company now. If you're not aware of what happened, the CEO, Reggie, flew to Dallas and laid off half of the Lanyon company on one day. This can happen and I saw really good people let go, while others got to keep their jobs due to politics. The best part of the whole thing is them talking about how much they are growing and planning to hire another 4-500 people this year, only to have just let 300+ people with industry experience leave the company. It made no sense from our side to see them fire half of the Lanyon team when we all needed the help. - If you ever thought about getting into this industry, avoid CVent at all costs. Once you're in the industry and are looking to move to a competitor, they will sue your new employer. This is who they are. If you don't like their product or working for them, they get very upset. Make sure your CVent hat is put on during work hours and find a new industry when you leave like so many of us have. - People openly dislike this organization and I know dozens of people looking to move out of the organization. It's not abnormal to hear complaints about the many, many, issues. - Half the organization has been outsourced to India. Take that for what it's worth. - If you have to travel for work, their travel policy should be taken into account. The Travel team is located in India as well. For the Sales Kick-off event this year, they booked travel for everyone on Super Bowl Sunday. If this was a team in America I don't think you'd have to miss the Super Bowl to travel for work. - Sharing rooms is part of the CVent travel policy as well. You are expected to share a room with another employee while traveling which causes many awkward and uncomfortable business trips. - Sales practices can be a bit aggressive and the will tell you they will never lose a deal on price. That's partly how they managed to get to where they are today, but with the growth of the company it's unlikely they can continue to discount to beat any competitor in every situation.

Pros

Great people and the job was fun.

Cons

Did not get paid what I’m worth. Not flexible in pay. Kept in the dark regarding pay for a long time.

Pros

I tried to come up with one, but simply cannot.

Cons

The pay and benefits are well below industry standards. Cvent loves to talk about being a SaaS industry leader, and in the same sentence offer you "benefits" from the 90s (accrued PTO, vesting 401k, etc). The OTEs are a good 30-40% below industry standards as well. OTE obviously it not everything, but it comes with a complimentary bogus commission plan. Sold a big deal in Q1 that gets you to 200% for the quarter? Hope you enjoy getting only 125% of that. They hang on to the rest to pay you out on any underperforming quarters, which is paternalistic and does not respect the time value of the money you earned. My other primary complaint is the abysmal culture. Granted, Cvent's goal is certainly to create an army of employees who never talk negatively of the company and praise its every move. So congrats to them, they have largely achieved this. For those of us who can see past this facade, it is a dark reality. They still refer to themselves as a family, which I thought companies had learned long ago was something you should not do. I also witnessed a whole auditorium of employees stand and clap for the CEO when he came on stage, which was so dystopian and disturbing. Both of these points can best be summarized by when I shared my critique of the new commission plan with a sales leader. We were not given our Q1 quotas/commission plans until well after the quarter was complete, which is a failure on so many levels. When I gave this feedback, I was told its "just a small step back for the company on the march towards the company's revenue goal." No rep should be asked to sacrifice their own success and financial planning for the benefit of their corporate overlords. If you are in SaaS sales, please look elsewhere.
