The good ole' boy system is very much applicable here. If you're French, you pretty much have it made there (it is a French company). Salary is below the national average for Engineers. Gulfstream and Bell Helicopter, for example, pay considerably more for the same position with the same amount of experience. People will tell you that it's due to the location of these other companies, but I can tell you the pay offers were considerably higher and the cost of living in the other areas were not so high to necessitate their higher offers in order to live and work at those locations.
