Pros
DMU has pockets of brilliant scholars and solid leaders. It has a beautiful environment in a park like setting in the middle of a urban area. On paper and in theory, it has all the pieces necessary to be a highly successful private medical school. Its a good place for a new academic to get some resume building experience.
Cons
The biggest challenge at DMU is the leadership and the culture can't clearly decide if it is a business, run 365 days a year, or a academic institution with the accompanying culture of academic freedom, holiday breaks, and support services that match the mission. Faculty are expected to work in an office-like 8 - 4:30 time schedule, including summers, and traditional academic breaks. Most of the people in middle leadership roles are good people who are in the wrong job. Some should be in more responsible roles, others should move on to a new company.
