Pros

Working at Dierberg's was a great first job as a teenager. I learned customer service and interpersonal skills which have served me well in every subsequent job I've had. Almost all customers are friendly if you make the effort to be friendly first. Almost all managers and coworkers are friendly if you make the effort to do your job. I had a very busy school schedule and management was accommodating of flexible hours when given sufficient notice. Was able to work during winter and summer breaks when back in town from college as well.

Cons

Pay is of course low, given that this was low-skill labor. Hourly wage does go up slowly over time according to well-defined scales with experience. Days are often long and monotonous, but not any different than what is to be expected at any high-volume retail job. Required to stand for 2-3 hours at a time for 4-8 hour shifts, often taxing on the lower body and back.
