Pros

So many people are so excited to work here! Discord has a lot of young, positive, and smart people who love the mission and want to build something great. The pay and benefits are world-class.

Cons

Work/Life balance is really challenging with incessant pings. This depends on your team, but frequently seeing late-night messages. Leadership is in a state of constant flux with reorgs and updates. There's an emphasis on 'transparency' - but ultimately there is a constant state of change and lack of focus around business goals that causes havoc. Some teams are completely overworked based on the whims of leadership, and feels like there is little trust in department heads or decision makers. Using the product for work is chaotic and confusing. There is tons of documentation, but not organized in a specific way. I feel for leadership as this company was based around small and mighty teams and a 'debate, decide, commit' framework > but that doesn't work at scale as you grow so fast past 500 people. A lack of structure leaves a lot of people floundering and at the whims of the highest paid person's opinion. We need to grow revenue. It feels like the company is constantly distracted by shiny objects, but ultimately we need to be making money and there isn't a clear vision right now.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feedback with us. We're glad to hear you feel that Discord has a lot of talented people who stand behind our mission. We're also thrilled to hear you feel the pay and benefits are world-class, something we constantly strive to ensure we're providing to our employees. Your thoughts are invaluable to us. Our company is just like a product — always a work in progress. And if we make mistakes, this type of direct feedback helps us understand the situation so we can make the necessary improvements. It’s true that we’ve gone through significant change since we were a company of less than 200 people. As we continue to hit milestones and bring Discord to more communities, we are committed to growing meaningfully and doing our very best to scale our hiring process and employee experience along the way. Our culture is an aspect of the company we are most proud of, and we want to ensure we can remain proud of it so we are laser-focused on keeping Discord a great place to work. As part of that, we’re always looking for ways to make sure all employees feel heard, such as our quarterly pulse survey, and will take this feedback into account as part of that. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. If you're comfortable, we’d also encourage you to flag these issues to your manager or People Partner to ensure we can take the necessary steps for improvement.
