Pros
I enjoyed the merchandising aspect of my job, and gained a lot of experience in that area during my time at Dollar General.
Cons
A store manager is everything. Management, HR, Loss Prevention, Cashier, Stocker, Merchandiser. I spent very little time being a true manager and more time as a glorified cashier. Small staff so if someone calls off most likely you're covering the shift. My store was in a market frequently visited by higher ups, which meant all the focus that should have been given to customer satisfaction was always directed towards making the store perfect for a 5 minute VP visit. Labor allowance is barely enough to cover the day, but when there's a visit coming suddenly the pocketbook is endless. VERY high focus on shrink, the company preaches that 70% of theft is internal. They are suspicious of everyone, which doesn't promote a very honest environment. They preach work/life balance yet expect you to do whatever it takes to get your work done. More often than not I worked well over the 48 required hours, and have worked countless open to close shifts.
