You do a good job of describing both the challenges and opportunities of working with complex content like XML and the technologies that manage it – it’s tricky business, and that’s why it’s valuable to our customers and partners. This kind of work can bring both great satisfaction and great frustration, sometimes both at once.
You mention upward mobility beyond Senior Developer, and that too is a mixed blessing for some. Becoming a leader is an option we try to offer to all of our high-performing staff, since we value promoting from within. But leading teams often means taking a step away from the hands-on interaction with technology, so it’s a trade-off that some deeply technical people don’t want to make. We invite you to talk with your manager about your career goals and aspirations. We retain good people by giving them a long-term path forward, and we want to make sure you have such a path.
