Great place to pursue a graduate degree (Physics) - Graduate Research Assistant Florida State University Employee Review

Pros

The physics department at FSU is very supportive and wants all of their students to do well. It is not an academically competitive culture with students vying to be top of the class, instead collaboration is encouraged and almost necessary to succeed in classes. There is a wide variety of research opportunities for physics students with a linear accelerator on campus, the National High Magnetic Field Lab a few miles away, a high energy group with strong ties to CERN, and a lot more.

Cons

The controversial new hiring of FSUs president puts the schools future ranking trajectory in question. While the Stipend is sufficient for the cost of living in Tallahassee, tuition fees take a substantial chunk.

Pros

Great benefits, excellent retirement options, generous leave, and strong job stability. The campus environment is welcoming, and there are opportunities for professional development and continuing education. The work is meaningful, and many departments foster a collaborative atmosphere with a good work-life balance.

Cons

Salaries can be lower than comparable positions in the private sector, and hiring, promotions, and other administrative processes can move slowly due to university policies. Budget constraints may affect raises and staffing, and parking can be challenging depending on your work location.
