Pros

Great benefits: free tuition each semester, 401(k) matching plan, vacation and sick day earnings every pay period (up to 170 hrs of each a year)... The people are quite amazing. They're not in it for the money, they're there for the students and the camaraderie that comes with education. And Tallahassee is a beautiful town full of everything from a bustling college town to the rivers for canoe trips and beaches within 45 minutes. As an FSU employee, you also get discounts to events around town and free entry to all women's sports!

Cons

The salary expectations can be relatively low and bonuses/merit increases are rare. Departments may get 1-2 merit increases for their entire staff a year. There's an unequal distribution of funding among the departments. And, like any university, a lot of politics and behind-the-curtain deals are necessary to keep things moving. As far as the administrative side is concerned, it can be difficult to move up if you're not either politically savvy or extremely focused on waiting out the end game.

Pros

Great benefits, excellent retirement options, generous leave, and strong job stability. The campus environment is welcoming, and there are opportunities for professional development and continuing education. The work is meaningful, and many departments foster a collaborative atmosphere with a good work-life balance.

Cons

Salaries can be lower than comparable positions in the private sector, and hiring, promotions, and other administrative processes can move slowly due to university policies. Budget constraints may affect raises and staffing, and parking can be challenging depending on your work location.
