Pros
Health insurance, retirement, annual leave etc. all much better than any other job I have ever worked. Most colleagues are considerate and polite. Dependent on department, but usually good work-life balance.
Cons
Staff are often heavily overworked and not provided adequate support from management. Many decisions are made by upper-level management without staff input, but staff is left to do the heavy lifting on the work those decisions create. Sometimes what's asked isn't reasonable. Some departments have inadequate staffing and rely on 1-3 staff to do a grueling amount of work for low pay. When those people quit, it's difficult to replace them because they are subject matter experts trained on things nobody else is. So, important processes start to fall apart. Limited opportunities for promotion in some departments.
