Pros

Typical startup benefits. Free lunch three times a week paid benefits stock options unlimited vacation free well stocked kitchen unlimited 3d prints work activities make your own hours dogs at work access to a well equipped makerspace 24/7

Cons

Disorganization to the point where there is no accountability. Even in management it is difficult to do hold anyone accountable. The opportunities and raises and bonuses are lies, and are only reserved for the heads of each department/PHD's, regardless of the additional work you do or impact you have on the product. Management is nepotistic, as echoed in previous reviews, leaving no real advancement opportunities available. Ostracism. If you disagree with the formlabs way, suggest something better, express discontent, or "go against the grain" to accomplish things more efficiently, you will simply be ostracized. Very relaxed attitude towards safety. There were many complaints that went unresolved despite being reported to the safety officer, management, and ultimately OSHA, then the company pretended like they had no idea what went wrong or why. Pay well below the area average. Management tries to goad you into working there by pushing the idea of stock options and free health insurance, but if you've worked at startups before, you will know that these benefits have become pretty commonplace and are not worth such a huge pay cut. Work overload. Poor scheduling and disorganization make everything constantly feel like that last minute rush.Procurement issues are rampant, no one is to be held accountable, leading the lower level guys to work constantly to try to make up for the deficit. When this is brought up to management, they respond by asking you to work more hours, even if you've already worked over 40 hours that week. Parking. There simply isn't enough. Lastly, Formlabs distributes emails to encourage their employees to leave positive reviews on Glassdoor in order to "win cool awards" and appeal to more prospective employees. There was a recent string of very good talent leaving the company for better prospects, and no effort at retention was made. Everyone is disposable to the company. Very little actual talent stays longer than 1-3 years.

Formlabs Response

I'm disappointed to hear that you had such a bad experience working at Formlabs. Formlabs is not for everyone, but no one should leave with such a negative feeling about their time here. We've made a concerted effort in the last year to add structure around performance and growth opportunities. On compensation, we've been taking a financially responsible approach (as opposed to tech startups that have raised huge amounts of money, paid big salaries, and failed quickly) which means salaries haven't been as high, but have always included significant equity which has rapidly grown in value. As we've gotten to the point where we pay salaries with our own sales and profits, we've raised compensation. Ultimately, it's an individual choice whether it's a fair deal, but many people continue to think so, including most of the best people that we've ever hired. We are explicitly trying to hire and retain people who want to define their own careers and are motivated by working with other very talented people on challenging problems that make a real impact in the world. So far, we've executed on that. We intentionally focus on nurturing the best talent and have built a core of excellent people to drive the company forward. (Link: https://www.nolancg.com/blog/spend_the_most_time_with_your_best_employees) This has created great opportunity for many individuals to grow, despite being fairly early in their careers. We prefer to develop internally where we can (though we've certainly hired many experienced managers). This is a tradeoff, but it's a conscious choice that we believe rewards very talented people and ultimately builds a better leadership team. The last thing we want is for people to drink the Kool Aid. Our culture of vigorous debate, rapid and direct feedback, and focus on results is how we've gotten as far as we have and how we will go much further. -- Max Lobovsky, CEO
