Pros

Close to where I live. Awesome location.

Cons

This place refuses to pay a livable wage to their employees. This mine site is over 60% contractor run. The contractors pay their employees a very reasonable wage. However, a "do not compete" has been put in place recently because Climax employees have been jumping ship to go work for these contractors in order to be able to afford to live in this area. What bothers me, is that these contractors are being brought in from all over the country to work in severe climates at over 2 miles above sea level. They are never given a chance to acclimate which leads to multiple incidents every month involving altitude sickness. We have this cute little "Agile" team, which is formed quarterly for retention brainstorming. They aren't allowed to discuss the real issues as to why our turnover rate is at about 100%. Annual raises are usually somewhere between 2%-3.5%, which isn't even close to keeping up with the rising cost of living, especially in a small mountain town where the primary industry is tourism. Line of progression is completely made up. Every position has a checklist of things that need to be done before you can move to the next level. I've been in two different positions now where I have met these requirements and progression has halted. Expectations and standards are made up, and when you reach them, interpretations change.
