Pros

It’s a foot in the door for environmental work and you do get to work on varied projects. There’s a lot of flexibility. Medical benefits are good.

Cons

Upward movement is nonexistent and they’ll just hire someone with less experience rather than promoting a qualified current employee off-cycle. They also have an unrealistic policy for billable vs non-billable work that makes doing any on the job training basically impossible. Non-medical benefits lag behind, particularly regarding time off and parental leave.

We respectfully disagree that GEI is a place to “get your career started, then move on.” We have many professionals that have enjoyed long tenure and rewarding, successful careers at GEI. While you highlight some of the things we’re proud about, such as our hybrid work environment and total rewards, we believe there is a lot at GEI for employees to enjoy. We established our utilization goals at the median of our industry to allow non-billable time for employees to attend learning opportunities within and external to our organization. We are focused on high level of engagement and mentoring across all levels of GEI and have a robust Learning & Organizational Development Program. For example, we just had our PM Workshop with over 500 mid-level professionals connecting in person to network and learn more about effective project management. We also have three levels of our Leadership Development and Building Blocks (focused on how to build client relationships) programs so that professionals of all levels have an opportunity to learn and grow. Our eLearning system has thousands of on-demand learning opportunities to help support growth and development of interpersonal, professional and technical skills. We have a variety of ways to engage in supporting our culture from getting involved in diverse project teams across our company to work on interesting projects for our clients to a variety of company committees. We also encourage quality, in person engagement weekly while enjoying the flexibility of our hybrid work environment. We would encourage you to engage in these activities so you feel more plugged into our culture and explore why over 87% of our employees recommend GEI as a great place to work! For our total rewards program, we regularly benchmark our program to make sure it’s above market to attract and support the retention of professionals. Our paid time off policy, consistently benchmarks in the top percentile in our industry. When we implemented our paid parental leave several years ago it was also above benchmarks in our industry. With that, we’re happy to report that in reviewing benchmarks, our industry, as a whole, has increased what is offered and we’ll also be reviewing our program as well. Stay tuned for updates on this program later this year.

Pros

Some of the people in the office/other branches were great and I continue to have friendships with them to this day.

Cons

If you’re a young professional, say good bye to seeing the inside of an office. You’re 100% in the field with no room to learn other parts of the job and grow your own client network and report writing. The dynamic between the leadership group (Amber Ahles and Brooke Bennett) and younger professional (especially females) was terrible. This was a mean girls club where you are judged by what you wear, what time you walk in and out of the door, and if you had an opinion. They never would take accountability for failing the younger professionals and then just blame you for not growing and improving at the pace they wanted you to. At the end of the day, management and leaders are responsible for the growth and success of the team. Additionally, if you want to be bullied by mid level professionals, who think they are superior to you and gang up with management, this is the place. Johnnie Noles will take care of that for you. In all, the only good thing this job brought me, was the “experience” to take myself anywhere but there. The way you treat people matters. And these three people single handily ruined the experience for me and others I have spoken with. Do better.

Thank you for taking the time to share your candid feedback regarding your experience at GEI Consultants. We sincerely appreciate your honesty and recognize the importance of learning from both positive and negative experiences shared by our team members, past and present. We are glad to hear that you formed meaningful friendships with some colleagues during your time at GEI Consultants. Our goal is to create a welcoming and respectful workplace for everyone, regardless of background or experience. Your feedback will be shared with our People Team and senior leadership to initiate a thorough review of our current practices and to identify steps toward improvement. Thank you again for your thoughtful and detailed feedback.
