Pros

Manageable Pace – The environment was not overly fast-paced, making it a stable role compared to other retail settings. Knowledge Application – A good opportunity to test and apply knowledge in nutrition, supplements, and wellness when interacting with customers.

Cons

No commission-based sales – Commission incentives were removed after COVID, but daily sales targets remained in place. Background in Sports Nutrition – As a student of sports nutrition, I brought strong product knowledge to the role. However, management often pressured staff to upsell supplements that were not appropriate for customers’ needs. This was especially concerning given the large number of elderly customers who relied on GNC for trustworthy advice. Pressure to Purchase Memberships – On multiple occasions, my manager required me to personally purchase Pro Memberships in order to meet daily sales quotas, which placed an unfair financial and ethical burden on employees. Lack of Training – Formal training was essentially nonexistent. On my first day, I was placed directly on the sales floor. While I excelled due to my background, someone without prior knowledge of supplements and vitamins would have struggled significantly. Compensation – The hourly wage was relatively low considering the workload and responsibilities. Customer Expectations – Many customers treated employees as if they were licensed healthcare professionals, expecting advanced nutritional advice. This required strong product expertise to meet expectations responsibly.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I wanted to comment on the commission incentives being removed. We still have weekly incentives, The compensation team processes the store incentives with every payroll. It is not commission; the incentives are based on several factors such as pro memberships, subscribe and save and store sales targets. Everyone in the store is eligible. I agree with you on the training comment, We can do better! We do have training hours that are assigned to stores for new hires, but the hours are limited.

Pros

The job provides excellent exposure to a structured sales plan for someone new to sales. The store gets plenty of foot traffic to create opportunities for customer engagement. The varriety of products to sell on is great as well. Pro Access is a great value for customers building a pre and post work out regiment or building a supplement routine.

Cons

You run the show. While there you are responsable for running the store.
