Pros

Depth of talent: Plenty of smart, dedicated people, across many teams. Impact: Historically, great mission and ability to make a difference have drawn kind and passionate people to Gilead. (Caveat: Talent exodus is under way).

Cons

External/On-Campus Daycare: • On-campus daycare is under investigation in 2019 • Daycare let go of leadership and entire classrooms of teaching staff in 2019, with limited explanation • Remaining teachers are great, but cloud of anxiety over institution has not been lifted Internal to Gilead: • Manager training and conduct around parental leave is uneven and unethical at times • Confidentiality breaches occur, potentially limiting development for affected employees • Multiple Gilead mothers have tragically endured hospitalization or significantly pre-mature delivery, due to work stress and unhealthy work culture • (Even sadder, they are not necessarily welcomed back, when they return to health and work) • Key projects may be stripped from high performers who are known to be expecting, with no rational explanation • Fathers and mothers may feel that they cannot take full leave, due to prevalent burnout/no boundaries culture • Those who do take leave risk slower career progression

Gilead Sciences Response

We strive to provide employees with benefits and services, such as onsite daycare, which are safe, convenient, help maintain work-life balance and support the health of our employees and their families. While Gilead does not manage the daycare center, we are committed to supporting our employees to ensure the onsite facility meets our high standards. Gilead’s employees and their families are important to us. We have robust leave of absence policies that are intended to support employees who need time away from work for a variety of reasons. The situation you describe regarding parental leave is unacceptable and is contrary to the spirit and plain meaning of Gilead’s HR policies and our core values. Please reach out to Human Resources or our Ethics Hotline (888-820-2719), or submit a complaint through our third-party ethics violations reporting system (https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/media/en/gui/51980/index.html). All allegations of misconduct are promptly reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken.

Pros

Meaningful, mission-driven work with the opportunity to contribute to projects that can have a real impact on patients. Colleagues are highly knowledgeable, supportive, and generally willing to provide mentorship. Gilead also offers strong resources, exposure to different functions within the pharmaceutical industry, and opportunities to work on high-visibility projects.

Cons

Cons: As with many large companies, decision-making and project approvals can sometimes move slowly because of multiple layers of review. The experience may also vary depending on the specific team and manager, and the number of meetings and internal processes can occasionally feel cumbersome.
